YMCA Youth Services runs an annual Youth Parliament Program, which gives young people between the ages of 16- 25 a chance to be heard in Victoria’s houses of parliament.
This year’s teams were beyond impressive, as they skillfully worked together to pass 18 of the 20 bills debated. The issues ranged from the Food Waste Awareness and Reduction Bill passed by Wyndham City Council’s team to the Animal Welfare in Shelters Bill passed by Hoppers Crossing Secondary College’s team. It was incredible to watch students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College debate motions and respond across the chamber as I had the honour of being their acting speaker.
The program is run by a team of experienced young volunteers called the Taskforce, who develop and deliver all sessions and opportunities for Youth Parliamentarians to engage in.
Applications for the 2024 Youth Parliament will open later this year, so be sure to join the mailing list on Youth Parliament’s website, vicyouth.ymca.org.au.
I hope to see you all back in the chamber one day!
