A strong Pasifkia community is growing in Tarneit and their presence brings a vibrant culture to Melbourne’s West. As our Pacific Islander Community Grows, it has been fantastic getting to share in their culture and traditions.
The Pasifika Community of Australia has been running fantastic events here in Tarneit, including the Carving with Cops, and the Nesian Rise Festival.
The Nesian Rise Festival was an amazing event with young Pasifika performers and creatives getting to show their talents. Pacific Islanders have long traditions of telling stories through dance and patterns in carvings, tattoos and other artefacts to teach each other and the wider community about their heritage and culture.
These stories describe their creation, identity and the journey to their current lands to provide guidance for living in harmony with each other and the environment.
The Carving with Cops event was run to share Wood Carving as a way of storytelling. With professional wood carvers leading the event alongside Vic Police, this event was a free and fun way to learn more about the pasifika community and their history.
It has been wonderful to see this community thrive in Tarneit.
The Allan Labor Government is continuing to deliver for Melbourne’s west with two new train stations and planning upgrades for a third – improving safety, accessibility and better connecting locals for years to come.
